Employee Spotlight: Madison Elkin
Meet Madison Elkin, a Senior Account Executive in Intermark Group’s Public Relations Department. By day Madison is a PR guru and savvy social media strategist, but by night she dabbles in the kitchen and sets personal records during CrossFit classes. Q: What are your responsibilities?
A: Somedays it’s making boxes of coasters look nice. Other days it’s standing on New York City streets, running between a sandy beach, to a Wi-Fi hotspot to send out releases. On most days though, I manage six accounts ranging from tourism to metal building construction, which involve social media, media relations, event planning and copywriting.
Q: Give us a little background on how you got into the industry?
A: I started out in journalism convinced that I was going to be the next Barbara Walters. (Just in case you want to go into journalism, it is nothing like her book, Audition.) They say it’s an easy transition from journalism to public relations, since one can’t exist without the other (actually journalism can very much exist without PR, if people enjoyed an entire thirty minutes of crime), and it was!
Q: What brought you to Intermark and how did you get started in your current position?
A: I guess you can say my husband brought me here. He’s a meteorologist and a move led us to Birmingham. I knew I wanted a challenge and to try my hand working at an advertising agency. Enter Intermark.
Q: What’s your favorite part about what you do?
A: I love speaking. Typing that out seems like a very weird thing to say, but it’s true! I love talking to co-workers, clients, media, audiences, dogs...
Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job?
A: I have never been an extremely organized human being. Having six clients forces you to get into that habit really fast! I probably have the messiest desk in the PR department.
Q: Do you have a favorite project that Intermark has worked on in the past?
A: Definitely anything to do with Alabama Tourism’s Sweet Home Alabama campaign. I have a tourism background, and I love that industry! I got the chance to spend two weeks in NYC over the summer talking to media, organizing an amazing Alabama-themed dinner and doing some really fun activations out on the streets.
Q: Are you seeing any new trends in the marketing/advertising industry?
A: If you’re not “going Live,” you’re missing out on HUGE viewership for FREE!
Q: Favorite quote/saying?
A: “Klieg, Klieg, Klieg-Du bist a Nar.” My Bubbe (Yiddish for grandma) would say this to me every so often. It means, “You are smart, smart, smart, but you are not so smart.”
A: CrossFit and cooking. Yes, I do talk about it a lot.
Q: Family, pets?
A: I live in Birmingham with my husband, Nate and our puppy-son, Bruno. I’m also very close with my mom, dad and brother back home in Miami.
Q: What’s something that most people would be surprised to learn about you?
A: That I do CrossFit (told you). I’m very short (read: 5’0), and many people are surprised by the weight that I can lift.
